聖書朗読：イザヤの預言9：1-6 詩篇96 テトスへの手紙2：11-14 ルカ2：1-14
私達はテレビの画像や、SNS、メディアで、赤いサンタクロースの服を着た人々や、美しいLEDのイルミネーション、特別な食べ物や音楽を見たり聞いたりします。
立ち止って、静かに正直に自分自身と向き合い、こう自分に問いかけてみましょう。「私にとって、クリスマスの本当の意味は何でしょう？」
この世で完璧な人間など、どこにもいません。私達は皆、心の中に同じような暗闇を持っています。問うてみましょう。「私の弱い点は何でしょう？」自分自身に正直であればあるほど、そして自分の弱さを認めれば認めるほど、人間的な自分の力を超えた助けと力が必要だということに気がつくでしょう。結局、神様が必要です。
全能である神は、私達の弱さを慈しみをもって見ておられます。神様は天の栄光をわきに置いて、神ご自身が私達と同じような人間になられました。神ご自身が私達人間に近づいてこられたのです。
人間の体と心を帯びた神がイエス・キリストです。今夜、私達はそのイエスキリストの人間としてのこの世での人生の始まりをお祝いします。
今夜の第一朗読の中でイザヤは言っています。「闇の中を歩む民は、大いなる光を見た」（イザヤ9章1節）
イエス様は私達人間に美しいお招きを与えて下さいます – それは神ご自身からのお招きです。今夜、生きている声で、「疲れた者、重荷を負う者は誰でも、私の元に来なさい、休ませてあげよう。」と言われます。（マタイ11章28節）
他のクリスマスの夜に、私は皆さんに、神が人間になることについて、しばしば神学的な言葉を使いながら話しました。今夜は自分自身の経験を皆さんと分かち合いたいと思います。
私は幼児洗礼です。私の家庭は代々キリスト信者です。私は小学校、中学校、高校と繋がっている教会に通っていました。それから8年間神学校で学び、25歳の時に日本に来ました。日本語学校を卒業した翌週、私は和歌山市の教会に赴任しました。最初のクラスで、私は男性たちに質問しました。「あなたの生活の中で一番の中心は何でしょうか？」一人は、「会社です」と答えました。他の一人は「阪神タイガースです」、又他の一人は、「自分の趣味です」
私はそれを聞いて、何と一時的なこと、何と薄っぺらなことだと思いました。私は自分自身と向き合いました。「私の人生の中心は何だろうか？」答えはキリストでした。私の主イエス・キリストは、私と共に人生の道を歩んで下さいます。私は暗闇の中を一人で歩んでいるのではない。私は大きな光をみました。そして、年をとっても、その光は更に輝いています。私はその光を分かち合うために、キリストの宣教師として、ここ日本にいます。

CHRISTMAS EVE Year A 24/12/25
Scripture：Isaiah 9:1-6; Psalm96; Titus2:11-14; Luke 2:1-14
On our TV screen, SNS and media we see people dressed in red Santa Claus, beautiful LED illuminations, special food and music.
Let us all stop and quietly and honestly face ourselves and ask oneself this question: “What does Christmas really mean to me?”
There is no perfect human in the whole world. All of us have same kind of darkness in our heart. Ask: “What is my weak point?” The more we are honest with ourselves, the more we acknowledge our weakness, the more we will realize that we need help and strength above our own power. In a word: WE NEED GOD.
The all knowing God saw our weakness with compassion. God put aside the glory of Heaven. God himself became a human being, just like us. God himself became close to us humans.
The God who took human body and soul is Jesus Christ. Tonight we celebrate the beginning of his life on earth as a human.
As Isaiah says in tonight’s first scripture reading: “For those who walk in the middle of darkness a great light is shining.” (Isaiah 9:1)
Jesus gives us humans a beautiful invitation – it is an invitation from God himself. Tonight in a living voice: “Come to me all you who are tired and carry heavy burdens, whoever you are, come and I will give you rest.” (Matt.11:28)
At other Christmas nights I have given you a talk on God becoming human, often using theological words! Tonight I will share my own experience.
I am a born Christian. I come from generations of Christians. I went to a church connected primary, middle and high school. Then to the seminary for 8 years, I arrived in Japan when I was 25. The week after I graduated from Japanese language school I was posted to Wakayama city church. In my first class I asked the men: “What is the main interest in your life?” One said, ‘my company’, another ‘Hanshin Tigers’, another ‘my hobby’.
I thought how passing, how much surface on the heart. I faced myself: ‘What is the center of my life?” It was Christ. Jesus Christ, my God, who walks the path of life with me. I am not walking in darkness. I have seen a great light. And that light even as I get older is shining even brighter. I am here in Japan as a missionary of Christ to share that light.
“May the God of Peace and light be with you.”
