聖書：知恵 9:13-18； 詩編 90； フィレモン 9-17： ルカ 14:25-33
65年前、古本屋で『日本のことわざ』を購入しました。1935年（昭和10年）の出版で、当時2円50銭でした。日本のことわざ「知恵は万代の宝（知恵は永遠の宝）」が印象に残っています。
このような人間の知恵は美しいものですが、さらに美しいのは、神なる聖霊から与えられる賜物である、知恵です。私は毎朝、自分自身と私たち信子安教会の信徒のために、この賜物を祈り求めています。
答唱詩編90の最後の節に「主よ、私たちに、残された日々を数えることを教え、知恵に向かう心を与えてください」とあります。
最も基本的で重要な問いを自分自身にしてみましょう。「この人生の目的は何なのか？」 私たちの多くは、死ぬという絶対的に確実な事実から逃げてしまいます。この人生は必ず終わりを迎えます。でも、それを暗く考えることはありません！私たちは真の故郷、父なる神のもとへ帰るのです。神は私たちのために、天国に、平安と完全な幸福という席を用意してくださっています。詩篇90は、私たち巡礼者にとって希望に満ちています。
さて、第一朗読の聖書が私たちに何を教えているのか考えてみましょう。「一体、人間が神の計画を知ることができましょうか。私たちはあまりにも不確かです。」
これは私自身の経験ですが、皆さんの経験と近いかもしれません。中学校最後の年、学費を払えるような賞を頂けるよう、長い間祈り続けました。しかし、叶いませんでした！高校では、理科で良い成績を取れるよう祈りました。しかし、叶いませんでした！足の怪我で9ヶ月間入院していた時、治るよう祈りました。でも、それが叶うまでに3年もの長い時間がかかりました！様々なことを祈りましたが、神様は、かなえてくれませんでした！私の祈りは無駄になったのでしょうか？神様は私の祈りに耳を傾けず、拒絶されたのでしょうか？決して、そうではありません！断じて、そうではありません！神様は知恵によって、様々な賜物を与えてくださいました。祈りは決して無駄になりません。神様は私たち一人一人を特別な子供として愛しておられます。神様は私たちにとって最善のものを与えてくださいます。神の道こそ最善であると悟るために、知恵を祈り求めましょう。神様を信頼しましょう。神様は私たちを愛しておられます。イエスは、私たちに卵の代わりにサソリを与えるようなことはしないと言われました。どうか神様、知恵という賜物をお与えください。
福音書には、現代の私たちには非常に奇妙な言葉を、イエスが語っている箇所があります。聖書を読むとき、その背景、そして当時の人々がどのように言葉で表現していたかを思い出すことが重要です。例えば、イエスの時代の人々は、ある点を強い否定的な言葉で表現することで、肯定的な点を強調していました。今日の福音書の中で、イエスは当時のやり方でこう言っています。「私に従う者は、父、母、子供、兄弟、姉妹、そして自分自身をも憎まなければならない。」 重要なメッセージは、「イエスを第一に、日々の生活の中心、そして土台としなさい。」ということです。子どもの聖歌の言葉を借りれば「イエス様が一番」です。これに従うなら、父、母、妻、子供、兄弟、姉妹、そして自分自身への愛も深まります。この愛は、新しく美しい意味を持つでしょう。
これを理解する知恵を祈り求めましょう。レンガを一つ一つ積み上げる仕事に「塔を建てている」と取り組む人のように、腰を据えて、私たちの努力が報われることを実感しましょう。（A）

Scripture: Wisdom 9:13-18; Psalm 90; Phill:9 -17; Luke 14:25-33
65 years ago I bought from a second-hand bookstore “Proverbs of Japan”. It was published in 1935 (Showa 10) and at that time cost 2yen 50sen! One Japanese proverb I quote: “Wisdom is an eternal treasure! (CHIE WA BANDAI NO TAKARA)
Such human wisdom is beautiful. But even more beautiful is the wisdom which is a gift given us by God, the Holy Spirit. I pray for this gift every morning for myself and our Shinkoyasu flock.
In the final verse of Responsorial Psalm 90 we read: “O Lord, make us know the shortness of our life that we may gain wisdom of heart.”
Let us ask ourselves this most basic and important question: “What is the purpose of this life” Most of us run away from facing the absolutely sure fact that we will die. This life will be ended. But that is NOT a dark thought! We return to our true home of God, our Father. God has made a reserved seat for us in Heaven – peace, full happiness. Psalm 90 is full of hope for us pilgrims.
Now let us consider what the first Scripture reading is teaching us. “What human person can know the plans of God? We are so unsure.”
This my own experience – close to all, I think! In middle school, in my last year, I prayed long to win a prize that would pay my school fees. I did not get it! At high school I prayed for high marks in science. I did not get them! When I was in hospital for 9 months with leg injury, I prayed for healing. This took a long 3 years in coming! I prayed for various things, but did not get them from God! Was my prayer wasted? Did God turn a deaf-ear and refuse? NEVER! NEVER. God in his wisdom gave me different gifts. Prayer is never, never wasted. God loves each of us as his special children. God gives us what is best for us. Let us pray for WISDOM to realize that God’s ways are best. Let us trust him – God loves us. At Jesus said he does not give a scorpion in place of an egg! Please God, give us the gift of WISDOM.
The Gospel has Jesus saying, to our modern ears, very strange words. It is important that when we read the Bible we must recall the background, also the way people expressed themselves in words of the time. For example by expressing some point in strong negative terms, in Jesus’ time, people were emphasizing the positive point. In today’s Gospel Jesus says in the way of that time: “To be a follower of mine you must hate father, mother, children, brother and sister – yourself too.” The important message is: “Put Jesus first as the center and foundation of your everyday life.” In the words of the children’s hymn: “Jesus is number one”. If we follow this, our love for father, mother, wife, children, brother and sister, and oneself too will deepen. This love will take a new and beautiful meaning.
Let us pray for the WISDOM to understand this. Let us sit down, like the man building a tower, and realize that our effort is worth it.
