聖書朗読：イザヤ 7:10-14; 詩編24; ローマ 1:1-7; マタイ 1:18-24
わたしたちは馬小屋の幼子を見るとき、どのような意味を感じるでしょうか。今日の聖書、イザヤ書とマタイ福音書は、その意味を一つの言葉で示しています。それが 「インマヌエル」 です。マタイは福音書をギリシア語で書きましたが、この言葉だけはあえてヘブライ語のまま残しました。
今日は、このとても重要な言葉の深い意味を、深く黙想しましょう。
イエスは、天国とその栄光から離れ、私たちと同じ普通の人間となってくださった神様です。インマヌエルとは「神は私たちと共におられる」という意味です。
詩編にはこうあります。「神は近くにおられる。」（詩編145:18、詩編34:18）この重要なメッセージは、フィリピの信徒への手紙（4:5）でもパウロによって繰り返されています。
教皇フランシスコは次のように書いています。「キリストの中心的な教え（ケリグマ）とは、復活したキリストが人生の道を私たちと共に歩んでくださるということです。イエスは私たちに勇気、導き、そして自由を与えてくださいます。」
イエスは生きた声で私たちに語られます。「わたしはいつもあなたと共にいる。」
私たちが喜びを経験するとき、イエスも共に喜んでくださいます。イエスはカナの若い夫婦の婚宴の幸せな雰囲気を共に楽しみました。私たちの喜びをイエスと分かち合いましょう。
孤独を感じるとき、イエスはそばにおられます。イエスはナザレの故郷から追い出され、深い孤独を味わわれました。イエスはこう言われました。「人の子には枕する所もない。」私たちが孤独なとき、イエスは共にいてくださいます。イエスご自身が孤独を経験し、私たちを理解してくださるからです。
イエスの特別な友人の二人は、イエスを見捨てました。ペトロは「私はあの人の弟子ではない」と言って、イエスを知らないと否定しました。そしてもう一人の弟子、ユダはお金のためにイエスを裏切りました。私たちも人間関係の苦しみを経験することがあります。そのようなとき、私たちの気持ちを知っているイエスのもとに行きましょう。イエスは共にいてくださいます。
イエスは多くの人々を助けました。人々がお腹をすかせていれば、イエスは食べ物を与え、病気であれば癒しました。しかし、ねたみに満ちた指導者たちに扇動され、人々はイエスではなくバラバの釈放を選びました。そして「十字架につけろ」と叫びました。なんという恩知らずでしょう。恩知らずは私たちの心を傷つけます。そのようなときも、イエスのもとに行きましょう。イエスも恩知らずを経験されたのです。
イエスは友人ラザロが死んだとき、深く悲しまれました。ラザロの墓の前で、イエスは涙を流されました。私たちが大切な人を失うとき、イエスは共にいてくださいます。
イエスは肉体的な痛みも経験されました。茨の冠はイエスに激しい痛みを与えました。私たちの頭痛も、イエスは理解してくださいます。
福音書の中で、イエスは苦しむ人々に深い同情を示されます。思いやりは、イエスの心の特別な特徴です。それは福音書の時代だけでなく、今日の私たちに対しても同じです。
イエスこそ、今日も「私たちと共におられる神」—インマヌエルです。これこそが、クリスマスと受肉の意味なのです。（翻訳担当：S）

Scripture: Isaiah 7:10-14; Psalm 24; Romans 1:1-7; Matt 1:18-24
When we look at the baby in the stable, what does it mean? Today’s scripture, both in Isaiah and Matthew, gives us the meaning in one word -INMANUEL. Matthew wrote the Gospel in the Greek language but left this word in the Hebrew language.
Today let us take time and deeply reflect the deep meaning of this very important word.
Jesus is our God who left Heaven and its glory to become a human just like us ordinary humans. INMANUEL means GOD IS WITH US.
In the Psalm, we read : “God is near.” (Psalm 145:18 and Psalm 34:18) This vital message for us is repeated by St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians(4:4).
Pope Francis wrote : “A central teaching of Christ (kerygma) is that Christ Risen walks beside us on the path of life. Jesus gives us courage, guidance and freedom.”
Jesus tells us in a living voice : “I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS.”
If we have some happy experience, Jesus enjoys it with us. Jesus enjoyed the happy atmosphere at the marriage feast of the young couple at Cana. Let us share our joys with Jesus.
If we feel lonely, Jesus is beside us. Jesus was chased out of his home in Nazareth. Jesus felt loneliness very deeply. Jesus said : “I have no place to lay my head.” Jesus is with us when we are lonely – Jesus experienced loneliness and understands.
Two of the special friends of Jesus deserted him. Peter denied that he even knew Jesus! “I am not his follower.” And another disciple, Judas betrayed Jesus for money. We too at times experience trouble with human relationship. Let us go to Jesus who has experienced how we feel. Jesus is with us.
Jesus did so much to help people. When people were hungry, Jesus fed them. When they were sick, Jesus healed them. But stirred up by jealous leaders, the people choose Barabbas for freedom, not Jesus. Then they cried “Crucify him.” How ungrateful! Ingratitude wounds us. Let us go to Jesus who is with us. Jesus experienced ingratitude.
Jesus suffered when his friend Lazarus died. In front of the tomb of Lazarus, Jesus cried. When we lose someone, Jesus is with us.
Jesus suffered physical pain – the thorns gave Jesus great pain – Our Headaches?
In the Gospels, we see Jesus with deep sympathy for others who were suffering. Compassion is special in the heart of Jesus – for those of Gospel times and the same with us today.
JESUS TODAY IS THE GOD WITH US – INMANUEL. That is the meaning of Christmas and Incarnation.
