聖書：イザヤ42章1–7節、詩編29、使徒言行録10章34–38節、マタイ3章13–17節
イエスは、ご自分の洗礼によって公生活を始められました。
洗礼者ヨハネの洗礼は、罪を悔い改め、新しく歩み始める人のためのものでした。
しかし、イエスは罪を犯されませんでした。では、なぜイエスはヨハネの洗礼を受ける列に並ばれたのでしょうか。
イエスはこの行いを通して、私たちにこう示しておられます。
「私はあなたがたと共にいる。私は罪人の友である。」イエスは、私たちと同じように人間としての人生を生きられました。
まことの人間として、イエスは人間の弱さ、誘惑、不安、苦しみ、人間関係による傷、失望、そして心の虚しさを経験されました。
今日の「主の洗礼」の祝日にあたり、イエスは改めて私たちに語りかけておられます。
「わたしはいつもあなたのそばにいる。あなたの人生の助けであり力である。」
第一朗読の預言者イザヤは、救い主がどのような方であるかを私たちに伝えています。
イザヤの言葉は詩として記され、深い意味を表すために、いろいろなイメージが用いられています。イザヤは、救い主であるイエスについてこう語ります。
「傷ついた葦を折ることなく、暗くなってゆく灯心を消すこともない。」
わかりやすく言うと、イエスは私たち人間の弱さをよく理解しておられる、ということです。
神であるイエスは、私たちが道を踏み外したときに罰するのではなく、忍耐をもって、私たちが立ち帰るのを待ってくださいます。
私たち自身の洗礼のとき、額に水が注がれ、この言葉が唱えられました。
「父と子と聖霊の名によって、あなたに洗礼を授ける。」
洗礼によって、私たちは三位一体の愛の中に迎え入れられます。
父である神は言われます。
「あなたはわたしの子。わたしはあなたを深く愛している。」
洗礼によって、私たちは御子イエスと、兄弟として、また友として結ばれます。
イエスは言われます。
「わたしは人生の道をあなたと共に歩む。わたしはあなたの助けであり、力である。」
洗礼によって、聖霊が私たちに与えられます。
聖霊は語りかけます。
「わたしはあなたの導き手であり、勇気と慰めを与える者である。」
私たちが洗礼をとおしていただいた、この偉大な賜物について、あらためて深く考えましょう。
神は私たちを選んでくださいました。それは、神の愛を他の人々と分かち合うためです。
イエスは私たちにこう言われます。
「あなたがたは世の光、地の塩である。あなたの身近な社会の中で、味わいを与えるもの（塩）となりなさい」
イエスさま、ヨルダン川で洗礼者ヨハネから洗礼を受けてくださったこと、そして私たち自身の洗礼を通して、神が私たちにも語ってくださるこの言葉に感謝します。
「あなたはわたしの子。わたしはあなたを愛している。」（翻訳担当：K）
Baptism of Jesus Year A 11/1/26
Scriptures: isaiah42:1-7; Psalm29; Acts10:34-38; Matt.3:13-17
Jesus began his public life at his Baptism. The baptism of John was for sinners who are starting again. But Jesus did not sin. So why is Jesus lined up to receive John’s baptism? Jesus is showing us by this deed: “I am with you. I am the friend of sinners.”
Jesus has experienced human life, just like us. As a true human Jesus experienced human frailty, temptation, worry, suffering, hurt from others, disappointment and emptiness of heart.
In today’s feast of his Baptism Jesus is saying to us again: “I am always beside you. I will give you help and strength in your life”
Isaiah, the prophet, in the first reading is telling us what the Savior will be like. Isaiah’s words are written as a poem where he uses images to express a deep meaning.
Isaiah says of Jesus, the Savior:
“He does not break the crushed reed. Nor quenches the wavering flame.”
In ordinary words, Jesus understands our human frailty. Jesus, as God, does not punish us when we stray from his path, rather, with patience Jesus waits for us to return.
At our own baptism water is poured our forehead and these words are said: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”
By baptism we enter the love of the Trinity. The father says: “You are my child and I love you very much”
By baptism we are united to the Son, Jesus as a brother, and friend, Jesus says: “I walk beside you on the path of life. I am your help and strength.”
By baptism the Holy Spirit is given us. The Holy Spirit says: “I am your guide and the one who gives you courage and consolation.”
Let us ponder on the great gift that God has given us when we were baptized. God has chosen us. But we are chosen to share God’s love with others. As Jesus tells us: “You are a light in darkness and salt (that is ‘taste’) in the small society in which you live.
Thank you, Jesus, for your baptism by John in the River Jordan, and for our own baptism where God says to us too: “You are my child, and I love you”
