聖書： 出エジプト 17：3-7 詩編95 ローマ5：1-8 ヨハネ 4:5-42
聖書は私たちにこう語りかけます。
「神は愛である。」（ヨハネの手紙一 4章8節・16節）
「神は豊かな憐れみに満ち、深い慈しみをもって、いつも赦してくださる。」
そして、私たちの聖歌もこう歌います。「いつくしみ深き、友なるイエスは」
これらの言葉は、神がどのように私たちに向き合っておられるかを示す、大切な言葉です。しかしイエスは、上手な教え手として、この言葉を私たちが心で理解できるように、二つの具体的な物語を語られました。それは、神が弱い私たちに向ける無条件の愛を示す物語です。
一つ目は、放蕩息子を迎える愛に満ちた父のたとえ話です。父は息子を抱きしめ、「おかえり、息子よ」と迎え入れます。
二つ目が、今日の福音―サマリアの女の物語です。この井戸は、現在のナーブルスの近くにあります。今でも深い井戸です。
イエスと弟子たちは正午ごろ、この井戸に着きました。イエスは疲れ、喉が渇いていました。とても人間的ですね。弟子たちは食べ物を買いに町へ行き、イエスは一人井戸に残ります。ここサマリアの井戸に。ユダヤ人とサマリア人は犬猿の仲でした。多くのユダヤ人はサマリア人を見下し、話しかけることさえしませんでした。しかし、イエスは話しかけられたのです。
町の女性たちは通常、涼しい朝に水を汲みに来ます。しかし、一人のサマリアの女が正午にやって来ました。彼女は五度の結婚に失敗し、今の男性とも結婚していません。孤独で、傷つき、恥ずかしい気持ちで、人目を避けて正午に来たのでしょう。
しかし、その井戸にイエスがいました。イエスは彼女に言われます。「水を飲ませてください。」ユダヤ人が自分に話しかけたことに、彼女は驚きます。
ここから、美しい対話が始まります。イエスは彼女を「ありのまま」に受け入れ、二人は語り合い、互いを知り、友となりました。
イエスは、身体の渇きを癒す水から、心を満たす命の水へと、優しく彼女を導かれました。
今日の私たちも、同じイエスに出会うことができます。心を開き、私たちの夢、希望、心配、痛み、悲しみをイエスに語りましょう。イエスは私たちを「ありのまま」に受け入れ、友情と励ましを与えてくださいます
私たちは命の水を受けています。イエスが惜しみなく与えてくださるこの恵みを、周りの人々にも分かち合いましょう。
「神は愛である。」
神は豊かな憐れみに満ち、深い慈しみをもって私たちを包んでくださいます。
憐れみ深いイエスは、私たちの友です。
イエスは私たちを招きます。「わたしのもとに来なさい。」

Scripture: Exodus 17:3-7; Psalm 95; Romans 5:1-8; John 4:5-42
In Scripture we read these words:
‘God is love.’ (1 John 4:8 & 16)
and ‘God is full of mercy, and his deep compassion,
and always ready to forgive.’
and our hymns: ‘Compassionate Jesus, our friend.’
Those are very important words but Jesus, a skillful teacher, give us 2 concrete examples to tell us what attitude God takes to us week humans – unconditional love. The first is the parable of the loving father who welcomes his prodigal son home. He embraces him: ‘Welcome, son.’
The second concrete example of unconditional love is today’s gospel – the woman at the well.
This well is near the present city of Nablus. The well is deep still.
Jesus and his disciples arrive at this well at noon. Jesus is tired and thirsty – how human! The disciples leave Jesus at the well and go into the town to buy food. The well is in Samaria. Jews and Samaritans were like dog and monkey. Most Jews looked down on Samaritans and did not even speak to them. But Jesus did!
Usually, the woman of the town would come in the cool early morning to drew water. But one Samaritan woman comes at noon. She has been married 5 times – failures.
Her present partner lives with her not married. She is lonely, hurt, embarrassed. So, she comes to draw water at noon when she will meet no one.
But the Samaritan woman arrives at the well and sees Jesus. Jesus asked her: “Please give me a cup of water.” The woman is surprised at a Jew speaking to her.
Here starts a truly beautiful conversation between Jesus and the woman. Jesus accepts her as-she-is. They talk and get to know each other. They become friends.
Jesus gently leads her from ordinary bodily thirst that water satisfies, to spiritual water of life that satisfies the heart.
We today can meet and talk to the same Jesus. Let us open our heart and tell Jesus about ourselves – our dreams, hopes, worries, pain, sadness. Jesus accepts us as-we-are. Jesus offers us his friendship and encouragement.
We have the water of life. Let us share the gifts Jesus so generously gives us with others.
‘God is love.’
God is abounding in mercy, full of compassion.
The compassion Jesus is our friend.
Jesus invites us: “Come to me.”
Let us go to this Jesus so full of love.
