四旬節の40日間は、神様がどれほど私たちを愛しておられるか、そしてその大きな愛に私たちがどのように応えるかを深く考える特別な期間です。
「四旬節」と聞くと、お酒、甘いもの、間食を断つことなどの節制を思い浮かべるかもしれません。このような節制は良いことですが、その土台には「神が私たちを愛しておられる」という確かな基盤が必要です。そうでなければ、節制は表面的なものになります。
今日の四旬節第1主日の典礼は、四旬節の中心テーマである、神様の愛と慈しみを示しています。
第1朗読の創世記では、アダムとエバが罪によって神様を拒む姿が描かれます。しかし、神様は二人を拒絶しません。
詩編51編は、私たちが罪を犯し、神様を忘れてしまうことがあっても、神様は深いあわれみをもって赦してくださることを伝えています。「神よ、いつくしみ深く私を顧み、豊かなあわれみによって私のとがをゆるしてください。」
第2朗読でパウロは、「義の賜物」について述べています。「義とされる」とは、神様との深い結びつき、温かい愛の関係に生きることです。イエスはこの素晴らしい賜物を私たちに与えるために、ご自分のいのちを捧げられました。それほどまでに私たちを愛しておられるのです。
神様は私たちを愛するあまり、ご自身が人間の姿となり、私たちに近づき、その愛を示してくださいました。
イエスは本物の人間としての経験をされました。冬の寒さ、苦しみ、裏切り、恐れそして誘惑を経験されました。どれも表面的なものではなく、実際に味わわれたものです。イエスは私たち人間を理解しておられます。イエスは私たちを愛し、人生の旅路を共に歩んでくださいます。ご自身がその道を歩まれたからです。
灰の式で私たちはこう呼びかけられます。「回心して福音を信じなさい。」
「回心」とは、神様の愛を新たな目で見つめ、その愛にもっと力強く応えようとすることです。
「福音を信じる」とは、心の奥深くで、神様が本当に私たちを愛しておられると信じることです。 そして、その愛を他の人々と分かち合うことへと招かれています。（翻訳担当：S）

Scripture: Genesis 2:7-3:7; Psalm 51; Rom 5:12-19; Matt 4:1-11
Lent is a special 40 days that emphasizes how much God loves us, and our reply to that great love.
When we hear the word ‘Lent’, do thoughts come up of sacrifice – that is, giving up alcohol, sweets, snacks. Such sacrifice is good, but it must have the solid base of God’s love for us. Otherwise, the sacrifices are surface.
The liturgy of this First Sunday of Lent gives us this main theme of Lent – that is God’s love and compassion.
In the first reading from Genesis, we see Adam and Eve rejecting God by sin. But God does not reject them.
Psalm 51 tells us that God loves us so much that even our sins, our forgetfulness of God, are forgiven. “O God, look on me with deep compassion. With your abundant mercy please forgive me.” In the 2nd readings from St. Paul, he writes of : “the abundant free gift of being made righteous”. “Being righteous” means having a close connection, a warm relationship with God – a relationship of love. Jesus so loves us that he gave up his life to win this wonderful gift for us. THAT is how much he loves us.
God so loved us that God himself took our human nature to be close to us and show us how much we are loved.
Jesus experienced true human condition. Jesus experienced being cold in winter and suffering, betrayal, fear. And Jesus experienced temptation. They were real – not surface. In other words, Jesus understands us humans. Jesus loves us. Jesus walks with us on life’s journey. Jesus himself has experience it.
We are called in the ceremony of ashes: “Cover and believe the Good News.”
“Convert” means to take a new look at God’s love and try to reply to that love in a stronger way.
“Believe the Good News” means to believe, really believe in the depth of our heart, that God loves us.
We share that love with others.
