聖書：創世記 １２：１-４；詩編 ３３；２テモテ１：８-１０；マタイ１７：１-９
以前、ある聖書学者のセミナーに出席した時のことが、深く印象に残っています。その学者は講義室に入ってきて、祈りを捧げてから、長い沈黙の後、こう言いました。「皆さん、この問いについて考え、答えてください。皆さん自身にとって、イエスは、今どこにいて、何をしているのでしょうか？」それから学者は15分間、講義室から出て行きました。私たちは皆、考えに集中しました。
学者は戻ってきてこう言いました。「イエス・キリストは天国でまだ人間の体を持っておられますが、今は神の完全な力と栄光をもっておられます。しかし、私たちの神であるイエスは、私たちの人間性を経験されました。御子が地上に来られたとき、彼は私たちと同じように真に人間でした。ヘブライ人への手紙に記されているように、イエスは人間の弱さ、苦しみ、誘惑を経験されたのです。（ヘブライ人への手紙 4:9-16） そうです、私たちの神は私たちと同じように人間の人生を経験されたので、私たちから近いのです。」
特に四旬節の間、私たちはイエスの人間性と苦しみについて考えます。私たちはいつも、イエスは今、私たちの神として天国に戻られたという背景で、この真の人間性について考えます。私たちの神であるイエス・キリストは、とても親しみやすく、話しやすく、頼りやすい方です。
福音書には、イエスが人里離れた場所に祈りに行く場面が記されています。使命を果たすためには、父なる神の力、導き、そして支えが必要でした。3年間の福音宣教の始まりなど、重要な時に、父なる神は「これは私の愛する子である」と言われました。
今日の福音書では、イエスはパリサイ人の憎しみを感じていました。彼らはイエスを殺そうと企てました。私たちと同じ人間であるイエスは、恐れを感じました。そこで、イエスは山に登り、父なる神に祈ります。私たちは、栄光に包まれたイエスを間もなく見ます。モーセと預言者エリヤはイエスを励まし、父なる神は「これは私の子である。私は彼を愛している。彼の命は私の心にかなう。彼の言うことを聞きなさい。」と言われます。
3人の弟子がイエスと共にいます。この3人は、ゲッセマネの園で、まさに人間であるイエスが恐れと苦悩の中で祈る姿を目にするでしょう。山では光に包まれ、園では非常に暗かったのです。
イエスは私たちに「私から学びなさい！」とおっしゃいます。真の人間であるイエスは、恐れと弱さを経験しました。そして、父なる神の力、導き、励まし、そして愛に頼りました。私たちも、神の助け無しには人間として生きられないことを認めなければなりません。聖パウロは今日の第二朗読（テモテへの手紙二 1:8）で、「神の力に支えられて」と語っています。
イエスは今日、私たち一人ひとりを愛し、求めるすべての人に支えを与えてくださいます。日々の祈りは、私たちに愛と思いやり、そして支えを喜んで与えてくださる私たちの神、イエスとの交わりを保つために、とても大切です。

2nd Sunday of LENT Year A 1/3/26
Scripture: Gen.12:1-4; Psalm 33; 2 Tim. 1:8-10; Matt. 17:1-9
I once attended a seminar by a Scripture scholar that left a deep impression. The scholar came into the lecture-room, said a prayer, then a long pause of silence. Then he said: “I ask all of you to think and answer this question. For you yourself where is Jesus now and what is He doing?” With that the scholar went out of the lecture hall for 15 minutes. We all thought!
When the scholar came back, he said: “Jesus Christ still has his human body in Heaven but now has the full power and glory of God. But our God Jesus has experienced our humanity. When the Son come on earth, he was truly human like us. As the letter to the Hebrews tells us, Jesus experienced human weakness, suffering and temptation. (Heb. 4:9-16) So our God is close to us, because he has experienced human life like us.”
During the season of Lent especially we consider the humanity of Jesus and his suffering. We always consider this true humanity with the background that Jesus has now returned to Heaven as our God. Jesus Christ, as our God, is so approachable, so easy to talk to, so easy to rely on.
In the Gospels we see Jesus going to a lonely place to pray. To fulfill his mission, Jesus needed the strength, guidance and support of God the Father. At crucial times, such as beginning his 3 years of proclaiming Good News, the Father said: ”This is my Beloved Son.”
In today’s Gospel Jesus has felt the hatred of the Pharisees. They plan to kill him. Jesus as a human like us felt fear. So, Jesus goes to a mountain to pray to the Father. We see Jesus in a short time in glory. Moses and the prophet Elijah give Jesus encouragement and the Father speaks: “This is my Son. L love him. His life pleases me. Listen to him.”
3 disciples are with Jesus – these same 3 will see the very human Jesus praying in fear and agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. It was light in the mountain and very dark in the Garden.
Jesus tells us “Learn from me!” Jesus as a true human experienced fear and weakness. He relied on the strength, guidance, encouragement and love of the Father. We too must acknowledge that we cannot live our human life without help from God. St. Paul tells us in today’s second reading (2 Tim. 1:8) “Let us be supported by the strength of God.”
Jesus today loves each one of us and gives his support to all who ask for it. Daily prayer is so important to keep in contact with our God Jesus who gladly gives us his love, compassion and support.
Let us meet Jesus again!
