朗読箇所：シラ書35章15–17節、詩編34編、二テモテ4章6–18節、ルカ18章9–14節
今日の福音の中で、イエスは意味深いたとえ話をなさいます。
祈りは短くてもかまいません。けれども、それは口先の言葉だけでなく、心の底からのものでなければなりません。
たとえ話の中で、ファリサイ派の人は口先だけで祈ります。彼はプライドが高く、外面的には立派な生活を送っています。断食をし、収入の十分の一を（維持費として）神殿に納めています。そして自分は他の人々よりも優れているとうぬぼれ、特に祈りに来ていた徴税人を見下しています。
しかし実際、このファリサイ派の人の祈りはすべて見せかけです。彼は偽善者であり、自己中心的で、思い上がっています。宗教的な行いを上辺だけこなせば神様の報いを得られると思っているのです。彼は間違っています。
一方、神殿の片隅で徴税人が祈ります。その祈りは短いものですが、心の奥底から湧き出ています。
彼は自分が弱い人間であることを知っています。そして神様が優しく、慈しみと理解に満ちた方であることも知っています。
詩編の言葉を思い起こしましょう。
「主はしいたげにあう者のそばにおられ、・・より頼む人を滅びからすくわれる。」（詩編34・19）
徴税人はこう祈ります。
「神様、罪びとのわたしを憐れんでください。」（ルカ18・13）この真実の祈りは、神様にまっすぐに届きます。
今日のシラ書の言葉で言えば、
「謙虚な人の祈りは、雲を突き抜けて行き、それが主に届くまで、彼は慰めを得ない。」（シラ35・17）
このような祈りです。
私たちも自らの弱さを思い起こし、静かに心から祈りましょう。
「主よ、罪びとのわたしを憐れんでください。」
第二朗読では、聖パウロがローマ皇帝に投獄されている姿が描かれます。彼は自らの人生を振り返り、自分がかつて大罪人であったことを認めています。しかしイエスは、パウロを回心へと招かれました。
ローマの法廷で裁判を受けたとき、人々は彼を見捨てました。けれどもパウロは言います。「しかし、わたしを通して福音があまねく宣べ伝えられ、すべての民族がそれを聞くようになるために、主はわたしのそばにいて力づけてくださいました。」（二テモテ4・17）
パウロは当時人気のあったオリンピック競技を「たとえ」に使って話します。ギリシアのレスラーのように、彼は「戦いを立派に戦い抜き」ました。マラソン走者のように、イエスの道を走り続け、ゴールのテープ切るまで進みました。
そして今や彼は、月桂樹の葉で作られた消えてしまう冠ではなく、
「『義の栄冠』を受けるばかりです。正しい審判者である主が、かの日にそれをわたしに授けてくださるのです。」（二テモテ4・8）
それを与えてくださるのはイエスご自身です。聖パウロは、私たちの模範として聖書に記されています。私たちもイエスの道を歩み続け、イエスが与えてくださる力に頼って進みましょう。
今週、短い静かな時間をもちましょう。自分の弱さを見つめ、心から祈りましょう。

Today in the Gospel Jesus has a parable full of meaning. Our prayer can be short but it must come from the heart and not just our lips. In the parable the Pharisee prays only with his lips. He is proud, on the surface leads a good life. He fasts, he pays one tenth of his income to the Temple(ijihi). He thinks he is better than most people, especially he feels superior to the tax collector who has also come to pray. But in reality his whole prayer is a fake. He is a hypocrite. He is self-centered and proud. He also thinks that just by outwardly doing these religious things that he will win rewards from God. He is wrong.
Then in the back of the temple the tac collector prays. His prayer is short, but it comes from his heart. The tax collector realize that he is a weak man. He also knows that God is a gentle, kind and understanding God. ‘God is full of mercy and has deep compassion’(Psalm). The tax collector prays like this:
“O LORD BE MERCIFUL TO ME A SINNER”
This sincere prayer, goes right up to God. It ‘pierces the cloud’ in the words of Shirah today.
Let us reflect how weak we humans are, and quietly pray from the heart the tax collector’s prayer. “O Lord ! be merciful to me a sinner”
In the 2nd reading from St. Paul, we see Paul in a prison of the Roman emperor. Paul looks back on his life. He was a big sinner, but Jesus called him to conversion. At his trail before the Roman judge, Paul felt deserted by humans.
But he says: “The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength. ” Paul uses the image of the Olympic Games which were popular then. Like the Greek wrestlers he fought a good fight. Like the Marathon runners he kept going on the path of Jesus. Jesus right to the finishing tape. And now Jesus will crown him, not with a fading circle crown of a laurel tree branch, but with a crown of unfading happiness and glory in Heaven-by Jesus himself. Paul is given to us in the Bible as our model. Let us keep going in the path of Jesus, always relying on the strength that Jesus gives us.
This week, let us make a quiet time. Let us reflect on our weakness and pray from the heart: ”O Lord be merciful to me a sinner.”
