聖書： イザヤ 58：7-10 詩編112 １コリント2：1-5 マタイ ５:13-16
イエスは今日、生き生きとした声で私たちにこう語っています。 「あなたがたは地の塩である。」 イエスは、クリスチャンの行いのシンボルとして、塩を用いています。
普通の塩が、私たちの毎日の生活にどのような意味と影響を与えているのかを見てみましょう。
塩は料理に味をつけます。 健康のためにも適度な塩は必要です、特に夏の暑さの中では。（もちろん、塩の摂りすぎはいけませんが。） 例えば、パプアニューギニアの奥地の山岳地帯では、外国人のために働く人の1日の賃金はスプーン一杯の塩です。 彼らはお金を使いませんが、暑い中では、塩は絶対に欠かせないからです。
ですから、イエスが「あなたがたはこの世の塩である」と言ったとき、その意味は「あなたがたの社会に入って行って、味を与えなさい」ということです。 自分の家庭、親戚や友人、職場や学校、出会うすべての人々に対して、スーパーマーケットのレジの女性に対しても同じことです。
私たちはどうすれば、他の人に味を与えることができるでしょうか？ 親切、思いやり、赦し、支えを示すとき、私たちは「塩」になります。 笑顔や「ありがとう」の言葉でも、人に味を与えることができます。 家庭生活に、そして私たちが住んでいる神奈川県に、日本に、ひとつまみの塩を加えましょう。 イエスの愛の証し人となりましょう。 イエスが注いでくださる愛を分かち合いましょう。 そして、その力と導きに頼りましょう。
イエスはこう言われました。 「あなたがたは世の光である。」 私たちは簡単に点く電気の光を当たり前のことだと思うように、イエスの言葉の深い意味を見逃しているかもしれません。
私の叔父の田舎の農場には、しばらくの間、電気が通っていませんでした。 暗くなって石油ランプに火が灯されると、私たちは皆、安心と励ましを感じました。 イエスは私たちに、それぞれの小さな社会へと出て行くように求めておられます。 キリストの平和と励まし、そして希望の道具となりましょう。 イエスの愛の証し人となりましょう。
日本26聖人殉教者は、まさにそのような証し人でした。 彼らは暗闇の中の光でした。 人々は、彼らの勇気、心の平和、喜び、そして温かいつながりを見て、深い感銘を受けました。 イエスはこう言われました。 「わたしがあなたがたを愛したように、あなたがたも互いに愛し合いなさい。互いに愛し合うならば、それによってあなたがたがわたしの弟子であることを、皆が知るようになる。」 （ヨハネ13:34-35）
聖書では、神を忘れた人々は暗闇にいるとされています。 彼らは物質的なものに重きを置いています。 テレビ、特にコマーシャルを見てください。 食べ物、元気に歩くこと、お金を稼ぐこと、会社で成功することを強調しています。 それは、悪ではありませんが、もっと大切なことがあります。
この「暗闇」に、一本のろうそくを灯しましょう。 一本のろうそくには力があります。
私たちは洗礼のときに、「光の子として歩みなさい」という言葉とともに、火のともったろうそくを渡されます。

Scripture: Isaiah 58:7-10; Psalm 112; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; Matthew 5:13-16
Jesus tells us today in a living voice: “You are the salt of the earth.” Jesus uses common salt as a symbol of how we act as Christians.
Let us look at the meaning and influence that ordinary salt has in our daily life.
Salt gives food taste. But some salt is necessary for our health, especially in the heat of summer. (of course, too much salt is dangerous!) For example, in the remote mountains of Papua New Guinea when working for foreigners a day’s wages is a table spoon of salt. They do not use money. Salt is absolutely vital in the heat.
So, when Jesus says: “You are my salt”, the meaning is: “Go into your society and give it taste.” In our own homes, relations and friends, at our workplace or school, to all the people we meet, to the woman standing at the super-market.
How do we give salty taste to others? If we show kindness, thoughtfulness, forgiveness, support, to others we are ‘salt’. Even a smile or saying ‘thank you’ can give taste to others. Let us put a pinch of salt into our family life, into Kanagawa-ken, Japan. Let us be a witness of the love of Jesus. We share the love he pours on us. And we must rely on the strength and guidance.
Jesus tells us: “You are the light of the world.” We are so used to instant electric light that we may miss the deep meaning of Jesus.
For some time on my uncle’s farm in the country there was not yet electricity. When it got dark the oil lamp was lit. We all experienced a sense of peace and encouragement. Jesus asks us to go out into our various small society. We are to be instrument of Christ’s peace, encouragement and hope. In other words, witness of Jesus’ love.
The 26 Japanese martyrs were just such witness. They were a light in darkness. People saw their bravery, peace of heart, joy and warm fellowship and were deeply impressed. Jesus says: “Love one another as I have loved you. If you love one another, all will see that you are my disciples.” (John 13: 34-35)
In the Bible people are in darkness when they forget God. They emphasize material goods. Look at our TV especially the commercials. They emphasize food, walking sprightly, making money, getting on in the company. Not evil – just not top priority.
Let us light one candle in this ‘darkness’. One candle has an effect.
We are given a lighted candle at our Baptism with the words: “Walk as a child of light.”
Let us share our light with others.
