聖書：イザヤ １１：１-１０；詩編 ７２；ローマ １５：４-９；マタイ ３：１-１２
今日の聖書箇所は「砂漠の状況」を描いています。洗礼者ヨハネは砂漠で説教しました（福音書１章）。イザヤ書は紀元前8世紀に書かれました。アッシリア軍がエルサレムを脅かしていました。人々はまるで砂漠の民のようでした。助けが無いと感じ、平和を切に求めていました。中には神に見捨てられたと感じる人もいました。「私たちの神はどこにいるのか！」
神は代弁者イザヤを通して彼らに語りかけます。「希望を持ちなさい。平和が来る。私はあなた方を忘れてはいない。」イザヤ書７章から１１章には「インマヌエル」という言葉が登場します。これは「神は私たちと共におられる」という意味です。神は今日の私たちにも、同じ希望と平和のメッセージを送っています。
イザヤの預言は続きます。「神はダビデ王の父エッサイの子孫である救い主を遣わされる。救い主イエスは私たちに平和を与えてくださる。」
私たち自身を見つめてみましょう。静かに謙虚に自問しましょう。「私の心には平安があるだろうか？」 家族の中で？ 親戚の中で？ 職場で？ 自問しましょう。「心配事はあるだろうか？ 将来について？ 健康について？ 身の安全について？ （大分と川崎、そして香港の火災を知って不安にならないでしょうか・・・）
もし不安を感じたら、その気持ちを平和のために祈るための呼び声としましょう。希望をもってイエス様に祈りましょう。聖書からの短い祈りは「主イエスよ、来てください」（マラナタ）です。
それだけでなく、広い心も持ちましょう。ウクライナ、ガザ、スーダン、ミャンマーでは戦争が起こっています。平和のために祈りましょう。私たちの救い主イエスは、平和のメッセージを携えて私たちのもとに来られます。聖霊が世界の指導者たちの心に宿りますように。彼らが平和と和解を願い求めますように。
まるで助けの届かない砂漠のように見えるかもしれません！ 神はどこにいますか？ イエス様はどこに？
このような砂漠の気分の中で、イエスは私たちにこう言われます。「恐れるな。私はあなたと共にいる。」
神は私たちを愛しておられます。神は私たちに平和をもたらすために御子を遣わされました。イエスは私たち一人一人に、励ましの言葉をかけてくださっています。「私の平和をあなたたちに与え、私の平和をあなたたちに残す。」
待降節に私たちは、救い主イエスが来られるのを迎える準備をします。神の御子、ダビデの子であるイエスは、2000年前にこの地上に来られました。そして、イエスは今も私たちのところに来続けておられます。「私たちがイエスをもっと深く知り、もっと深く愛し、もっと近くで従えますように。」（チチェスターの聖リチャードの祈り）
今週は平和のために祈りましょう。平和の源であるイエスが、私たちの心に、そして不安定なこの世界に、より深く再び来てくださるよう祈りましょう。

Scripture: Isaiah 11:1-10; Psalm 72; Romans 15:4-9; Matt. 3:1-12
Today’s Scripture depicts a ‘desert situation’! John the Baptist preached in a desert area (Gospel 1). The reading from Isaiah was written in the 8th century (before Christ). The Asyrian army was threatening Jerusalem. The people felt that they were like people in a desert. They felt that they had no help. They yearned for peace. Some felt that God had deserted them. “Where is our God”!!
God speaks to them through his spokesman Isaiah: “Have hope, peace will come. I have not forgotten you.” In the book of Isaiah chapter 7 to 11 the word “Immanuel” appears. That is ‘God is with us’ God says the same message of hope and peace to us today.
Isaiah’s prophecy continues: ‘God will send a Savior who will be a descendant of Jesse, King David’s father. The Savior Jesus gives us peace.
Let us look at ourselves. Let us ask ourselves quietly and humbly: “Do I have peace in my heart?” In my family? Among relatives? In my workplace? Let us ask ourselves: “Do I have worries? About my future? About my health? About my safety? (fire in Oita and Kawasaki – and in Hong Kong)
If we feel unsettled, let us use this feeling as a call to pray for peace. Let us pray to Jesus WITH HOPE. A short prayer from the scripture is “Come Lord Jesus” (Maranata)
But also let us have a broad heart. There are wars in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, Myanmar. Let us pray for peace. Jesus, our Savior, comes to us with a message of peace. May the Holy Spirit enter the hearts of world leader. Let them seek peace and reconciliation.
The outlook may seem like a desert where there is no help! Where is God? Where is Jesus?
In this desert mood Jesus says to us: “Fear not I am with you.’
God loves us. God sent his Son to bring us peace. Jesus says to each of us these encouraging words: My peace I give you, my peace I leave with you.’
In Advent we prepare for the coming of our Savior Jesus. Jesus, the Son of God, the Son of David came on this earth 2000 years ago. But Jesus keeps coming to us. “May we know Jesus more closely, love him more dearly, and follow him more nearly’ (The prayer of St. Richard of Chichester)
This week let us offer prayers for peace. Let us ask Jesus the source of peace, to come again in a deeper way into our heart and into our unsettled world.
