神に依頼する人は 水のほとりに植えられた木にたとえられる
イエスはよくたとえ話を用いてメッセージをお伝えになります。たとえ話は、イエスの時代では、物事を教える方法でした。今でもとても効果的です。
たとえ話は次にように働きます。教える人は日常生活の中から具体例を取り上げます。聞く人はその場面を想像します。そして、たとえ話を聞き終えたとき、聞いていた人は「このたとえ話のメッセージは私にとってどいうことだろう？」と考えます。今日は、エレミヤと詩篇の作者がこのたとえ話を使います。2本の木を想像してください。1本の木は水が少ない砂漠の場所にあります。それは元気そうに見えますが、干ばつが来ると、根が浅く水に届かないために、枯れてしまいます。
もう1本の木は川の近くに植えられています。この木は根を深く伸ばして命を与える水を得ます。干ばつが来てもこの木は元気で葉が生い茂り、果実を実らせます。水は命です。
私たち人間もこれらの木と同じです！神様は命です。私たちは物質的なものや銀行に預けたお金や投資に頼っていませんでしょうか？ 私たちは快適な生活に頼っていませんか？ 神様を忘れてこの世の物だけに頼るならば、苦しみや災害、孤独が来たときに崩れてしまいます。人は神様を忘れて物質的なものに頼ると本当の幸せにはなれません。このようなもの自身は悪いわけではありませんが、それをどのように使うかまた頼るかが大切です。今日の聖書朗読では、イエス、エレミヤ、詩篇の作者が、人生を歩むための正しい道を示しています。その道を歩むなら、干ばつや苦しみの時でも本当に幸せになれます。私たちは自分だけの力で何でもできるわけではないことを素直に認めましょう。私たちには神様から命、平和、充実、幸せを頂くことが必要です。イエスの言葉で言い換えると「貧しい人々は幸いである。神の国はあなたがたのものである。」ということになります。
イエスが使う貧しいという言葉の意味は、自分の人間的な弱さを認めることです。それが「貧しい」ということであり、イエスつまり神様からの愛、助け、導き、力に頼りなさいということです。神様は私たちに命を与えてくださいます。神様は私たちのことを気にかけてくださいます。神様に信頼しましょう。イエスはいつも私たちのそばにいると約束されました。イエスは約束を守ります。
神様の愛に頼っていることに感謝し、その愛を他の人々と分かち合いましょう

Scripture: Jeremiah 17:5-8; Psalm 1:1,2,3,6; Luke 6:20-26
Jesus so often gives us his message in parables. Parables were a way of teaching in thetime of Jesus. They are still very effective today.
This is the way a parable works. The teacher uses an example from ordinary life. Thelistener is asked to imagine the scene as we listen. Then when the teacher has finishedtelling the parable, the listener says to oneself: “What is the message of the parable forme?”
Today, Jeremiah and the Psalmist use this parable. Imagine 2 trees. One tree is in adesert place with little water. It looks healthy. But a drought comes and because its rootare shallow and cannot reach water which is life for a tree, it withers – and dies.The other tree is planted near a river. This tree sends its roots deep. So it gets life givingwater. When a drought comes, this tree continues to be healthy, green and bears fruit.Water is life.
We humans can be just like these trees! God is life. Do we rely on material goods, onmoney in the bank or invested? Do we rely on being comfortable getting on in life? Dowe forget God and rely on this world’s goods? If so, when suffering or disaster orloneliness comes, we will collapse. A human being cannot be truly happy, if we forgetGod and rely on material goods. Such things are not bad, but it is the way we use themor rely on them.
Today in the Scripture readings, Jesus, Jeremiah, the Psalmist give a true path to walkin this life, and so be truly happy – even in times of drought – suffering.Let us humbly admit that we are not self-sufficient. We need God to give us life, peace,fulfillment and happiness. Such an attitude in the words of Jesus is this : “Happy are thepoor, for they shall inherit the Kingdom of God.”
To be poor in the sense that Jesus uses is to admit one’s human weakness, that is being‘poor’, and so rely on the love, help, guidance and strength that Jesus, as God, gives us.God gives us life. God cares for us. Let us trust God. Jesus has promised to be at ourside always. Jesus keeps his promise.
Let us appreciate how we depend on the love of God – and let us share that love withothers.
