聖書朗読：使徒たちの宣教 5：12-16 詩篇 118 ヨハネの黙示 1：9-19 ヨハネ 20：19-31
今日の福音は、死から復活されたイエス様が弟子達に現れる場面です。
現代の私達へのメッセージを理解するために、この場面の背景はとても重要です。
イエスがユダヤ教の指導者たちによって十字架上で磔にされた後、弟子達は恐怖を感じながら暮らしていました。次は自分たちが殺されることになるのではないかと恐れていました。それ故、彼らは部屋の中に籠っていました。ほとんどの弟子達はとても自分を恥じていました。何故なら、ゲッセマネの園でイエスが兵隊達に捕らわれた時に、皆逃げて、イエスを見捨てたからです。ペテロはあとで公にイエスを知らないと否定しました。
突然、どの扉も開いていないのに、イエス様が弟子達の真ん中に現れました。「幽霊だ！」と彼らは叫びました。その当時の人々は、亡くなった人の霊が現れるのは、生前に傷つけられたことに対する復讐の為だと信じていました。
イエスはその考え方をよく知っていました。イエスの言葉は重要です。「あなた方に平和があるように」。イエスは神様として、当時も今日も人間の考え方や弱さをよく理解しておられます。そして、昔も今も、思いやりといつくしみに満ちています。
イエス様は私達の罪をお赦しになります。イエスは神様として、私達との温かい交わりを望まれています。しかし私達の罪は、その温かい交わりにとって、障害となる壁を作ります。もし私達がイエスにごめんなさいと言うなら、その罪は赦されるでしょう。赦しの秘跡は、全て赦されることの具体的な証明です。
では部屋に戻りましょう。イエスが最初に弟子達に現れた時、弟子トマスは仲間と一緒にいませんでした。トマスはイエスが十字架上で亡くなるのを見て、疑いと失望、悲しみで一杯になりました。トマスは頑固でした。そして少しの間、彼は仲間から離れていました。弟子達のところへ戻ってきたとき、彼らはトマスに言いました。「私達は主イエスに出遭いました。」頑固で疑い深いトマスは言いました。「私は決して信じません。」
イエスが2度目に現れ、その時、トマスは仲間たちといました。イエスはトマスを叱ったでしょうか？とんでもない！とんでもない！とんでもない！イエスはトマスをありのままに受け入れます。このありのままに受け入れることは、トマスを深い信仰告白へと導きます。「わたしの主、わたしの神よ！」イエスのいつくしみがトマスを癒したのです。イエスは今日の私達に対しても同じです。
聖書には非常に大事な言葉があります。
「イエスは昨日（ 2000年前 ）も今日も、また永遠に変わることのない方です」（ ヘブライ人への手紙 13章8節 ）
イエス様のいつくしみを理解して味わう為に、人々に対するイエスの優しさ、イエスがなさった行動を見て下さい。例えば、ナインの未亡人、追いやられた寂しいライ病者達、友人であるラザロの死、ペテロを受け入れたこと、そして今日のトマス。イエス様は私達に対しても、同じようにいつくしみに満ちておられます。

Scripture：Acts 5:12-16; Psalm118; Revelation1:9-19; John 20:19-31
Today we have a scene when Jesus, risen from death, appears to theApostles.
The background to this scene is important, in order to understand itsmessage to us today.
After Jesus was crucified, by the leaders of the Jews, the disciples livedin terror. They feared that they would be the next to die. So they lockedthemselves in a room. Most of the disciples were filled with shame becausethey had run away and deserted Jesus when he was taken prisoner by thesoldiers in the Garden of Gethsemane. Peter later publicly denied that heknew Jesus.
Then suddenly, without any door opening, Jesus appears in the middleof the group. “A ghost” they cried. At that time people believed that thespirit of a dead person came back to revenge hurt that was given them whilealive.
Jesus knew how they thought. Jesus’s words are important! “Peace to youall.” Jesus, as God, at that time long ago, and today understands humanthought and weakness. Jesus, then and now, is full of thoughtfulness andcompassion.
Jesus forgives our sin. Jesus, as God, wants to have a warm relationshipwith us. But our sin can build a wall that is a hindrance to that warmrelationship. If we tell Jesus that we are sorry, sin is forgiven. Thesacrament of forgiveness is a concrete assurance of total forgiveness.
Back to the room. When Jesus appeared the disciple Thomas was notwith the group. Thomas on seeing Jesus die on the cross was full of doubt,disappointment, and sadness. Thomas was stubborn. Thomas kept awayfrom the group for some time. On his return to the group, they told Thomas:“We have seen the Lord Jesus.” Thomas in his stubbornness and doubt said:“I refuse to believe.”
Jesus appears a second time. This time Thomas is with the group. DoesJesus scold Thomas? No! No! No! Jesus accept Thomas as-he-as. This veryacceptance leads Thomas to make a deep act of faith. “My Lord and my God.”The compassion of Jesus heals Thomas. JESUS IS THE SAME TO USTODAY.
The scripture has extremely important words.
“Jesus is the same yesterday (i.e. 2000 years ago), today and forever”(Hebrews 13:8)
To understand and enjoy the compassion of Jesus, look at his kindness topeople, that is the actions of Jesus. For example, the widow of Nain, thelonely rejected lepers, the death of his friend Lazaros, acceptance of Peter,and today Thomas. Jesus is the same to us, full of compassion.
