4th Sunday EASTER Year C 11/5/25
Scripture: Acts 13:14-52; Psalm 100&23; Rev. 7:9-17; John 10:27-30
In Yokohama City, we do not see sheep! So to appreciate the warm and encouraging words of Jesus : “I am the good shepherd.”, we need to consider sheep and shepherds in the time of Jesus.
In the time of Jesus, the shepherd was usually the flock-owner’s son. So the shepherd had a special relationship with the sheep. They were his own. The flock was usually 10 – 20 head. When a lamb was born, the shepherd gave it a name. The sheep hears its own name and goes to the safety that the shepherd gives. In today’s Gospel : “The sheep that belongs to me listen to my voice.” (John 10:27).
Listening to the shepherd’s voice was important. At night, for safety, the flocks of many shepherd were put into a special sheep-fold. Imagine, for example, 200 sheep in one fold. In the morning, the shepherd would stand outside the fold and call his sheep. Each sheep knew his voice. They would go to him. The shepherd would then guide them to food and water. The sheep needed that guidance. The natural enemy of the sheep was a wolf. The shepherd had a special stick to fend off anything that would put his sheep in danger.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus says to us his sheep: “I know my sheep and they follow me…..” They will never be lost and no one will ever steal them from me.” (John 10:28)
In this Gospel, “I know my sheep.” has a very special and important meaning. At the foot of the page of ‘Seisyo To Tenrei’(Bible and Liturgy) page 5, we read: verse 27 ‘I know’ is not just to know in one’s head. It has the meaning of deep companionship. Sheep and shepherds has a warm relationship.
That is the parable of sheep and shepherd. Let us apply it to each of us humans and Jesus as our shepherd. Jesus calls each of us by our personal name. Do we hear, in prayers, his gentle and kind voice? Do we listen to Jesus when he talks to us through reading the Bible and prayer. Jesus, as our shepherd, is always beside us. Jesus guides us on the road of life. Jesus defends us when we are in danger. Jesus offers us a warm relationship full of love. Let us go to Jesus in prayer, when we pray, we keep in contact with a friend who loves and cares for us.
Today there is so much static in our hearts – smartphone, games, SNS.
Or we fall to the temptation of ‘being busy’!
Jesus wants to meet us and share his warm love. Let us go to the gentle shepherd Jesus in prayer. Let us share the love Jesus gives us with others.
