TRINITY Year C 15/6/25
Scripture: Proverbs 8:22-31; Psalm 8; Romans 5:1-5; John 16:12-15
We Christians strongly believe that there is only ONE GOD. But in the inner life of the one God, there is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We humans cannot grasp the immensity of God’s inner life. It is a mystery. The chief thing to hold on to is that the Trinity is LOVE. God is love. Please do not run away from mystery, thinking it is too hard to understand! This mystery is love. So let us enter into the mystery, enjoy the love, taste the love and live our daily lives in this love. In the last line of the first reading (Proverbs), God says: “I find delight in the human race.” That is truly beautiful. Our God wants to enjoy us, and have fun with us. Let us join in! At our Baptism these words are said “_, I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” At Baptism we enter into the love of the Trinity. To understand the Trinity to a certain extent, the Church gives Father, Son and Holy Spirit their special work. For example, God the Father created each of us. The Father gives us life. Our God Father is a gentle, kind and understanding of human weakness Father. St. Luke in chapter 15 emphasizes that our Father always gives us a warm welcome. We are his children and he loves us as his special children. Jesus tells us he is ‘ABBA’ – a small child’s word for a gentle and kind father.
Within the Trinity there is the Son. The Son is equal to the Father. Jesus says: “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). The Son put aside the glory of Heaven and become a human, just like us. Our God is close. Our God having become truly human understands human frailty because Jesus has experienced frailty. We see our God Jesus so kind to those who are sad, suffering or lonely. This is the heart of God. “Christ is the same yesterday (that is 2000 years ago), today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). Jesus too enjoys fun – as at the marriage feast at Cana. Jesus our God calls us ‘friend’. Jesus is patient with our doubt, lack of understanding, weak faith and also our sins. Jesus was known as ‘the friend of sinners. Jesus is love. Jesus is our fellow traveler’.
Within the Trinity there is the Holy Spirit equal to Father and Son. One in God. Jesus tola us that he returns to Heaven, intercedes before the Father, and sends the Holy Spirit to us. The Holy Spirit works within our hearts. The Holy Spirit is a breath that gives life and strength. The Holy Spirit is a warm fire of love. We walk the path of life that Jesus has taught us. But we weak humans need the strength, warmth, guidance and encouragement of the Holy Spirit.
Let us taste the love of the Trinity – and share it.
