Scripture: Isaiah 66:10-14; Psalm 66; Gal. 6:14 -18; Luke 10:1-20
Sometimes, in our congregation at Mass, I see a mother with her baby inher arms. The child seems wrapped in safety, peace and love. This beautifulscene always reminds me of today’s first Scripture reading from Isaiah:The Lord says “I will send peace like a flowing river. As a nursling you shallbe carried in my arms, and fondled on my lap. Like a mother who comfortsher child, I will comfort you.” (Isaiah 66:10-14)
The mother and her baby are a symbol and taste of God’s love, protectionand peace.
The human heart deep down earnestly yearn to taste peace — peace inone’s own heart, in our family, among our relations and friends, in our schoolor workplace, or wherever we meet, in Japan and the world too.
PEACE is the special gift of our Savior and God, Jesus. At the birth ofJesus, the message of the angels from heaven was ‘Peace on earth’. In hislife on earth Jesus gave peace to people — to Zachaeus and his family, tolepers, to those in tears, and especially to weak sinners. “Go in peace, yoursins are forgiven.” After the Resurrection of Jesus when he appeared to hisdisciples the prayer of Jesus was “Peace be with you.” At the Last SupperJesus said to the disciples, and us today: “My peace I give you, my peace Ileave with you. Let not your hearts be troubled.” (John 14:27)
And in today’s Gospel Jesus sends out 72 followers to be instruments ofGod’s peace. Jesus said to the 72: “Let your first words be: “PEACE to yourHouse” We in Japan need this peace!
Jesus commissioned these 72 to be instruments of God’s peace. But Jesuswarned them that to carry out this commission, do not rely on humanstrength, words or intelligence. Jesus sends, and he also gives strength andguidance. That was 2000 years ago.
The Risen Lord Jesus has chosen us today and sends us out to be hisinstruments of his peace. We in Japan need peace!
Ask yourself: ‘Do I want to taste peace?’ If so, let us keep in contact withJesus, the source of true peace. We do that when we meet Jesus in prayerand liturgy. Share this peace.
The biggest obstacle to peace is self-centeredness. That is the theme of thewell-known ‘Prayer for Peace’ by St. Francis of Assisi. Let us pray, let us beinstruments of peace.
