16th Sunday Year C 20/7/25
Scripture: Genesis 18:1-10; Psalm 15; Colossians 1:24-28; Luke 10:38-42
In the Bible, meals, and hospitality of meals, are an important and interesting theme. In Genesis, Abraham gives a meal and hospitality to 3 humans, who are actually angels. These angels are sent by God to assure Abraham of God’s care and love. In the New Testament Zacchaeus gives a meal to Jesus, as does Matthew. They become friends of Jesus.
In today’s Gospel Martha and Mary have a meal with Jesus. They are friends of Jesus.
Jesus himself invites us to have a meal with him. At the meal we enjoy the friendship of Jesus. In the Bible, Revelation 3:20, Jesus says these words to us: “Here I am, I stand at your door and knock. If you here my voice and open your door, I will come in and we shall have a meal together.” (Revelation 3:20)
Let us open the door of our hearts at prayer and invite Jesus into our hearts. Jesus is a close and trusted friend. We can meet Jesus himself in prayer. Prayer is communication with Jesus as a friend. When we talk to friends, we use mostly our own words – not words written by someone else! So too in our friendship with Jesus. By our prayer, we keep in contact with Jesus. And so, our bond of friendship with Jesus grows stronger. Jesus says: “I call you, my friend.”
Martha and Mary were both praying with Jesus. Prayer in communication. Martha used words, Mary had word-less communication. Mary just sat and enjoyed the friendship with Jesus.
In our prayer too, sometimes we are silent like Mary. Sometimes we use words like Martha. Martha was expressing how she felt and complained to Jesus. What is going on in our heart can be the raw-material for prayer – suffering, worry, problems, decisions, emptiness, anger or temptation. We share these with Jesus who is a friend who listens and can be trusted.
Last week in Yomiuri Shinbun there was an interesting news item. The Government Agency for Health, Labor and Welfare recommended the Pokémon ‘characters’ Pikachu and Kabigon as helpers to our sleep. They might help us to sleep, but a better way is ‘Night Prayer’. On the reverse side of this week’s notices is a sample of night prayer. We can use this slowly and thoughtfully or we can use it as a model for night prayer using our own words.
Jesus wants to be our friend. Jesus stands at the door of our heart. Let us open our door and invite our friend Jesus in.
