Scripture:Gen. 18:20-32; Psalm138; Coloss.2:12-14; Luke 11:11-13
I have a book called ‘PRAYER’ by an author I trust (RONALDROLHEISER). In the book he says the first step in prayer is to give Godtime. That is, decide on a time to pray, and go!
Then, he advises, let us turn our mind and heart to God. Then say to Jesus:“Lord, teach me to pray.” (Today’s Gospel). Prayer is a gift from God. Wehumans give God time to work!
Prayer is a relationship with God. This is for more important thanthinking of words to use or say!
Examples of people in the Bible who have a warm relationship with Godand so talk to him is Abraham in today’s Genesis. Abraham speaks to Godwith humility, reverence but above all with worm friendship. In the NewTestament we read: “Abraham was God’s friend (James 2:23). Friends talkto each other.
Moses is another example. We read: “The Lord talked to Moses, face to faceas a man speaks to his friend.” (Exodus 33:11)
In the New Testament we see Jesus having a long and interestingconversation with a woman at a well. It is a beside the well conversation.(John 4:1-30) This conversation has an atmosphere of warmth, acceptanceand love.
Jesus was friend of Martha and Mary. We see Jesus talking to them andthey talk to Jesus as friends. (Luke 10:38-42)
Jesus is our friend; “I call you my friend” (John 15:15)
Today I will share with you the way I pray!
Sometimes I recall that I am the loved child of God, my Father. I call him“Abba”. I ask the Holy Spirit to teach me the meaning of this word that Jesusgave us. Love, acceptance – trust. The word ‘Abba’ expresses a loving, warmrelationship.
Most times in prayer I talk and listen to Jesus as my friend and brother. Irecall the invitation to prayer from Jesus: “Come to me you who are tiredand heavily burdened.” (Matt. 11:28)
At times of tiredness or stress, I get into the heart of Peter as he sinks inthe storm. I cry out. “Lord Save me I am sinking.” (Matt. 14:30) At times I use the words of Psalm 27: “Lord Jesus show me your love, hidenot you, face from me.”
At times, as a friend, I complain to Jesus! When suffering or sick, I say tohim; “Why? Why?” This leads me to accept the pain and unite with him.Jesus says: “I am with you.”
I look at Gaza and Ukraine and ask Jesus why he does not act! I pray for the flock of Shinkoyasu as their shepherd. Of course I havedistractions all humans do. I pray for the person or happening in thedistraction and then go back.
(Post Script: I have a cup of strong black coffee to do not doze while praying.)
