聖書：エレミヤ38：4〜10 ；詩編40；ヘブライ12：1-4、ルカ12：49〜53
聖書は、神様からの生きたメッセージです。今日のメッセージは、「イエスを見つめ、自分の前に置かれた人生の旅路を忍耐強く走り抜こう」というものです。
ギリシャのマラソン競走は、新約聖書の初期の時代には既に知られていました。この人気のある競走は、新約聖書（聖パウロとヘブライ人への手紙）において、私たちの人生の旅路の象徴として用いられています。42キロメートルのマラソンでは、最後の5キロからゴールテープまでの間は勇気が必要です。私たちの人生も同じです。
その勇気はどこから来るのでしょうか？それは、私たちのそばを走ってくださるイエスからです。「イエスから目を離さないようにしよう。」
今ここで、イエスを改めて見つめ直しましょう。
イエスは神様です。聖ヨハネはこう語ります。「初めに言があった。…言は神であった。すべてのものは言によって造られた。…言は肉となり、私たちの間に宿られた。」
イエスは神の栄光と力を脇に置き、私たちと同じ人間になられました。イエスは100％神であり、同時に100％人間です。私たち人間には理解できないことですが、神様はあらゆることがおできになります。この受肉は神秘です—信仰の神秘です。
イエスの神性と人間性の両面性を受け入れることは、とても大切です。たとえば、イエスが神様であるという事実が、イエスが本当に私たちと同じ人間であったという意義を弱めることはありません。イエスは私たちと同じ心と体を持っていました。このことで、私たちの神様は人間に非常に近く、親しみやすい存在となります。
イエスは、私たちと同じように感情や人としての反応を持っておられました。イエスは傷つき、失望を経験されました。たとえば、イエスは神様の愛のメッセージを故郷の人々に語られましたが、人々はそのメッセージを拒絶し、イエスをナザレから石を投げて追い出しました。これはイエスを傷つけました。イエスは孤独も感じられました。「空の鳥には巣がある。だが、人の子には枕するところもない。」（ルカ9章58節）
イエスはカナの婚礼に出席され、笑い、皆と語り合い、楽しみました。イエスは友人ラザロの墓の前で涙を流されました。イエスはエルサレムの丘の上でも涙を流されました—人々が神の愛を受け入れなかったからです。イエスが泣かれた—美しいことです。
イエスは激しい誘惑を経験されました。父なる神様の助けに頼り、打ち勝たれました。
イエスはファリサイ派の憎しみを感じ、彼らがイエスを殺そうと計画していることを耳にしました。イエスは本当の恐れを感じられました。イエスは今日の福音の中でこう言われます。「私は受けるべき洗礼を受けなければならない。その成就まで、どれほど苦しんでいることか。」ここでの「洗礼」とは「苦しみ」を意味します。では、イエスはどうされたのでしょうか？父なる神様に力と勇気を求めて祈られました。
ユダの裏切りとペトロの否認は、イエスを傷つけました。ゲツセマネの園で、イエスは祈られました。「父よ、この苦しみを取り除いてください。」祈りの中で、イエスは父が自分を愛していることを悟られました。
イエスが私たちに語られる「私はあなたと共にいる」という言葉には、非常に深い意味があります。私たちはその言葉によって励まされます。
聖書はこう語ります。「私たちには、大祭司であるイエスがおられます。あらゆる点において、わたしたちと同様に試練に遭われたのです。だから、時期にかなった助けを頂くために、大胆に恵の座に近づこうではありませんか。」（ヘブライ人への手紙4章14〜16節）
私たちはイエスのもとに祈りに行きましょう。イエスはこう言われます。「疲れた者、重荷を負う者は、だれでも私のもとに来なさい。休ませてあげよう。」（マタイによる福音書11章28節）（S）

Scripture is a living message from God. Today’s message is “Persevere in running the race that lies before us, while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.”
The Marathon race of Greece was well known in early New Testament times. This popular race was given in the New Testament (St. Paul and Hebrews) as a symbol of our life’s journey. In the 42 kilo-meter Marathon, the last 5 kilos to the finishing tape takes courage. In our life too!
Where do we get this courage? From Jesus, who runs besides us. “Let us not lose sight of Jesus.”
Let us take a new look at Jesus.
JESUS IS GOD. As St. John tells us : “In the beginning was the word, …, the word was God, who created all things. …. the word was made flesh and dwelt among us.”
But Jesus put aside the glory and power of God and became a human being, just like us. Jesus is 100% God and at the same time 100% human. This is God himself who can do all things – even what we humans cannot grasp. This incarnation is a mystery – a mystery of faith.
It is very, very important to accept the balance between the God head of Jesus and his humanity. For example, the fact that Jesus is God must not lessen the meaning of Jesus being truly human like us. Jesus had a body and heart like us. This makes our God very close to us humans, and so approachable.
Jesus had feelings and human reaction like us. Jesus experienced hurt and disappointment. For example, Jesus gave God’s message of love for all to the people of his own home town. They rejected the message and drove Jesus out of Nazareth with throwing stones. This hurt Jesus, who also felt loneliness. “Birds have nests, but I have no place I can call home.” (Luke 9:58)
Jesus attended the wedding at Cana, laughed, spoke with everyone, and enjoyed himself. Jesus cried in front of the tomb of Lazaros, his friend. Jesus cried on the hill overlooking Jerusalem – the people had not accepted God’s love. Jesus cried – beautiful!
Jesus experienced severe temptations – he fought and conquered them, relying on help from the Father.
Jesus felt the hatred of the Pharisees and herd them that they planned to kill him. Jesus felt real fear. Jesus says in today’s Gospel : “I must receive a baptism (baptism in this context means ‘suffering’). How great is my anguish.” What did Jesus do? Prayed to the Father for strength and courage. The betrayal by Judes and the denial by Peter hurt Jesus. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed : “Father, take this suffering away from me.” In prayer Jesus realized that the Father loved him.
When Jesus says to us : “I am with you.” These words have a very deep meaning. We get encouragement.
Scripture tells us : “We have Jesus our high priest who has been through suffering like us. Therefore, we can go to the throne of grace with confidence to get help in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:14-16)
Let us go to Jesus in prayer. Jesus says : “Come to me, all you who are tired and loaded with pain. I will refresh you.” (Matt 11:25)
