聖書：シラ書3：17-29 詩篇68 ヘブライ人への手紙12：18-24 ルカ14：1-14
イエスは、さまざまな町から、さまざまな職業から、さまざまな性格や意見を持つ12人の弟子を選びました。この12人は3年間イエスと共に暮らし、彼らはイエスの教えを聞き、その生き方を学びました。彼らは、イエスが全ての人に対して、また彼らにたいしても敬意を持って接する様子を見ました。
しかし、彼らは人間であるから弱い - 彼らには短所もあり、長所もありました。主な短所の一つは、自己中心的な傲慢でした。12人はみな、神の国で「ナンバーワン」になりたかった。（しかし、頑固さの中で、彼らは、それがこの世の国であり、その国ではそれがとても重要だと考えていたのです。）12人の間で競争がありました。
例えば、ヤコブとヨハネは、彼らの母親を使って、イエスに彼らを１番と２番にするように頼みました。これを聞いた他の10人は妬んで、腹を立てました。イエスと共に３年を過ごした後も、最後の晩餐の時に、12人はまだ１番になるために競争していました。そこで、彼らの指導者であるイエスは、彼らの足を洗いました。-それはしもべの仕事でした。イエスは言いました。「わたしは、あなた方に模範を示した。あなた方も同じように互いに足を洗い合いなさい。」（ヨハネ13章3-15節）
謙遜は、私達人間には、なかなか伝わりません。私達人間は、自己中心的な傲慢さと「面目」を気にする傾向があります。
今日の聖書の中で、イエスが私たちに与える挑戦は、謙遜 - 2番目になり、他の人に席を譲るということです。次のように自分に問うてみましょう。
１） 私は自分を他の人と較べて、自分の方が優れていると思っているでしょうか？
２） 誰か他の人が成功すると、私は喜ぶでしょうか？
ある時、偽りの謙遜があります。謙遜は真実に基づいていなければなりません。コンプレックスを持っている人もいます。彼らは、「私には才能がない、私には何もできない。」と考えます。でも神は、私達一人一人に賜物を与えて創造されました。 - 音楽、絵を描く、手の器用な人もいれば、頭の良い人もいる、聞き上手な人もいれば、助けることが上手な人、他の人を励ますことが上手な人もいます - 他にも沢山、神からの賜物があります。私はダウン症の男の子を知っていますが、彼への贈り物はほほえみです。
自分自身に正直に、深く問いかけましょう。「私への贈り物は何でしょうか？私には何が出来るでしょうか？」それは神様からの恵みですから、神様に「有難うございます」と言いましょう。この恵みは神からのものであって、自分自身からのものではありません。その源を認めましょう。この恵みは、他の人よりもわたしたちを優れたものにするのではありません。恵みに対して神に感謝することは、傲慢に対する薬です。
福音書の場面は、一番良い席を確保するのではなく、他の人に譲るようにと教えています。この姿勢は「他の人を中心にする」ということです。このことは、家庭生活や職場、学校で、また車を運転する時にも、平和をもたらします。
福音書はまた、私たちが快適に暮らしている時、他の人と分かち合うように、特に貧しい人々と分かち合うようにと教えてくれます。
あるイギリス人の殉教者は、こう書いています。「犯罪人やひどい人生を送っている人を見ると、私は自分自身にこういいます。「神の慈悲がなければ、私もそうなっていたでしょう」
イエスは生きている声で私たちにこう言われます。「わたしは柔和で謙遜なものだから、わたしに学びなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは安らぎを得られる。」（マタイ11章２９節）(M)

Scripture：Shira 3:17-29; Psalm68; Hebrews12:18-24; Luke 14:7-14
Jesus chose 12 apostles from different towns, different occupations, and with different characters and opinions.
These 12 lived with Jesus for 3 years. They heard the teaching of Jesus and the way he lived. They saw how Jesus treated everyone with respect – the 12 too!
But being human they were weak. – they had weak points and strong points too. One prominent weakness was self-centred pride. The 12 all wanted to be ‘Number One’ in the Kingdom. (But in their stubbornness they thought it would be a worldly kingdom and that they would be very important in that Kingdom!) There was competition among the 12.
For example, James and John used their mother to ask Jesus to make them No.1 and No.2. The other 10 hearing this were jealous and angry. Even after 3 years with Jesus, at the Last Supper the 12 were still competing to be No.1! So Jesus, their Leader, washed their feet. – a servant’s job. Jesus said: “I have given you example. Do the same wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:3-5)
Humility does not come to us humans easily. We have an in-built tendency to be self-centred proud, and conscious of ‘face’!
The challenge Jesus gives us in today’s Scripture is humility – taking second place, giving our sect to others. Ask ourselves:
1 Do I compare myself to others, thinking that I am better?
2 Am I glad when someone else is successful.?
There can be a false humility. Humility must be based on truth. Some have an inferiority complex. These think: “I am unskilled. I cannot do things.” God created each of us with some gift – music, art, some are skilled with their hands, some with their head, some are good listeners, some one good helpers, encourage others – and many, many other gifts. I know a Down Syndrome boy who had the gift of a smile.
Let us ask ourselves honestly and deeply. “What is my gift? What am I good at?” It is a gift from God, so let us say ‘thank you’ to God. The gift comes from God not ourselves. Let us acknowledge the source. The gift does not make us better then others. Gratitude to God for his gifts is a cure for pride.
The Gospel scene tells us to not secure for the best places, but to give up our seat to others. This attitude is ‘other centred! It brings peace to family life, at our workplace or school, even to the way we drive a car.
The Gospel also tells us that when we are living comfortably, to share something with others, – especially the poor.
An English martyr wrote this: “When I see a criminal or someone living a bad life I say to myself: “These but for the grace of God, go I.”
Jesus says to us in a living voice.: “Learn from me for I am gentle and humble of heart. And you will find rest for your souls” (Matt. 11:29)
